OPTIMUS is a package of web-based consulting tools for energy managers and energy consultancies, in order to make cities more energy efficient and sustainable.
The purpose is to optimise the energy use in the city’s buildings (municipal and educational buildings, buildings for entertainment and sports facilities, hotels, etc.), taking into consideration their interaction with energy systems (renewable energy systems, CHP, battery storage, etc.).
Buildings are responsible for 40% of the European Union's (EU) energy consumption and 36% of its CO2 emissions, one way to curb these statistics by up to 10 %, without needing to change the existing infrastructure is to simply monitor energy use in buildings.

OPTIMUS package of consulting tools has been designed with the necessary degree of generalization, so as to be easily adapted by both public and private sector organizations, with different characteristics, energy infrastructures, needs, priorities and types of energy demand. In practice, the DSS will be used by the energy managers of the municipality or buildings.
OPTIMUS gives particular emphasis on the municipal building sector. It is targeted towards municipalities and focused on Signatories to the Covenant of Mayors (CoM), which want to optimize energy use in their buildings, become “smarter” and help Europe become a “greener” place.
The overall package is also suitable and applicable to private organizations with different types of buildings, such as buildings for entertainment and sports facilities, hospitals, hotels, etc. who want to monitor and improve their energy efficiency and therefore, their energy spending.
The OPTIMUS DSS works simultaneously with existing energy management systems, integrating five multidisciplinary data sources(weather conditions, buildings’ energy profiles, feedback provided by occupants, energy prices and energy production), in order to propose short-term action plans for energy managers.

The OPTIMUS package is the outcome of a three-year project funded under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration.
The project consortium comprised of leading experts in various fields including: five leading research institutes in the area of energy optimisation, data modelling, and developing sustainable energy plans; two engineering consulting companies providing energy services; the local authorities of the three pilot cities; and Europe’s leading network of local governments.
